Position outline
We are currently seeking a Laboratory Aide for our fast-paced Laboratory Support Services Team at the Scotland Institute which is part of the Laboratory Operations Group. This large team is underpinned by four key values, Safety, Respect, Reliability and Teamwork which we would expect the appointed individual to adhere to whilst carrying out their duties.
Key outputs for this support role include:
- The provision of clean glass ware.
- Preparation of sterile solutions such as L-broth, PBS and Distilled water.
- Support of laboratory equipment such as water baths and pH metres.
- General upkeep and cleaning of laboratory areas.
- Waste collection and treatment for the entire Institute
- Replenishment of laboratory consumables such as Tissue culture plastics.
The successful candidate will not require college or university degree qualifications as there is training involved to carry out this role. Previous laboratory experience is not essential, but having experience working in a service driven role is extremely desirable.

Essential
- Use of initiative, and being able to plan ahead, prioritise and be responsible for own workload within the department.
- Excellent communication skills with colleagues and line managers.
- Ability to multi-task with the motivation to work independently, but also as part of a team in a fast-paced working environment.
- Work to Team values, ensuring a safe working environment, being reliable and treating others with respect.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a service driven role.
- Awareness of safety in a working environment, as well as safety procedures involved in working with high pressure machinery for sterilising solutions and waste.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word & Excel for accurate record keeping.
